Danny Karpel: Production

It was late 1988 when I first saw Tom playing with his 'Zaviot', a Harold Rubin's band. At that time, I was already busy experimenting a new and exciting friendship with a drummer and a dear friend, Doron Raphaeli, later evolving into the 'Minuette Jazz Quartet', a band I have been playing ever since.

I remember that Tommy suggested we should play sometime together so we set up a meeting and from the very first notes, we realized that 'this is something else'. We played continuously for straight 9 hours without even stopping to catch a breath.

This led to a beautiful musical romance, a guitar duo named 'Two-and-Free'. The duo performed in almost every tiny spot one can imagine all over Israel, and we managed to cultivate loyal audience even in remote and enchanted places.

We recorded some staff together, but the most interesting recording session took place in Danny Karpel's RIP legendary radio show, 'All that Jazz'. Danny watched us in one of our gigs and decided to host and record us in his show, and maybe produce an album. This idea led to a session, in which we recorded our repertoire 2-3 times in case something will go wrong during the show. Eventually, we played it all again, live. These are the takes brought to you in this album...

Under a governmental radio station rules, it was eventually impossible for Danny to produces Jazz albums, so his idea ended up stored somewhere in the station's archive. All I had was a normal deck cassette copy and some videos to remind me this beautiful experience.

Eventually, the Bellmans left back to Canada. I met Tommy during his 1998 visit in Israel, and only then decided to produce this album to preserve our music. We are close friends until today.

The original recording tape was full of noise and hiss. The cassette copy however, remarkably survived for 10 years and conserved the original recording spirit.
